Prof. Javier Andreu-Perez
Reader in Human-Centred AI
Leads the Lab. His research covers explainable AI, uncertainty, computer vision, robotic sensing and industrial informatics, and it anchors the Lab’s work on physical AI and on alignment.
LeadPeople
Each person leads work at the frontier of their own field. Names link to University of Essex staff profiles. Samantha Look coordinates the Lab’s work with partners.
The Lab
The Lab is part of the Centre for Computational Intelligence.

Lead
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Fuzzy rule-based reasoning, neuro-symbolic AI, conformal learning and uncertainty quantification. He works on models that can state their reasoning, and maintains the open-source Ex-Fuzzy library.
Senior Research Officer
Human–computer interaction and machine learning. She works on fatigue and cognitive-load monitoring from ocular and neurophysiological signals, and on gaze-controlled robots.
Senior Research Officer
Gaze estimation and interaction, including eye tracking on everyday mobile devices. He works on a BBSRC-funded eye-research project with the University of Oxford and Stanford University.
Lab collaborators
Dr Chowdhury and Dr Ali are lecturers at the University of Essex and collaborators of the Lab, rather than members of the Lab’s core staff.
Lecturer · collaborator
Human–robot cooperation, autonomous mobile robots, exoskeletons and embedded brain–computer interfaces, including EEG on FPGA. He has run post-stroke rehabilitation-robotics trials in India and the United Kingdom.
Lecturer · collaborator
Speech and biomedical signals with machine learning, privacy protection for those signals, audio forensics and real-time predictive analytics. He completed his PhD at the Centre of Intelligent Signal and Imaging Research, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.
Coordinator
Coordinates the Lab’s work with external partners, including education and joint projects. Enquiries can also go to j.andreu-perez@essex.ac.uk.
